One of the most mainstream apps to introduce augmented reality to the masses is the iPad app by Trip Advisor.  The popular travel website taps into its database of over 60 million user-generated reviews of hotels, restaurants, and travel locales to create an interactive augmented reality experience based on the user’s current location.  This free augmented reality app uses the GPS system in a user’s mobile device to pinpoint their location and then scans its database for places the traveler may want to check out and includes directions on how to arrive.  The information is viewed by layering business profiles, reviews, distance and maps over the user’s current location.  Here’s a sample of what it looks like:


Travel and augmented reality are a perfect match.  With the influx of social data and limitless web-based content, augmented reality is an accessible and highly effective tool for harnessing the components that can transform a disastrous trip into an epic journey.  Augmented reality’s expansive nature also supports the constantly changing and updated information that has become the foundation of modern-day of travel.  The vice-president of mobile at Lonely Planet, Jeremy Kreitler, succinctly added, “You are most information-starved when you are in a completely new environment. Those are probably the environments where augmented reality will flourish the most.”
